The project to unearth the quilts of Fogo Island revealed a trove of knowledge and design that was not thought to be worth more than the functional warmth the quilts provided.
A Fogo Island fundamental is using and reusing all resources, an economy of materials. The Patchwork quilt is an inspiring example of this concept. Piecing together scarps with an anarchy of colour and pattern the realized quilt comes together in a cohesive whole. The design stays true to the concept of Outport Aesthetics; the ability to express the maker’s individuality and flourish while ignoring conventional rules.
The complex quilt is made on Fogo and Change Islands by quilters with decades of passion and experience. The colours and patterns of the cotton material will vary as materials can be vintage or new remnants.
The quilt can be made with a herringbone stitch in several colours that in a time-intensive intricate stitching process. All quilts come with a tag embroidered with the name of the maker who design and crafted it.
A bespoke option is available for those who want to be a part of the design process in selecting textiles and stitching.
