New Artist in Residence | Justin Ming Yong
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | @justinmingyong

Starting the New Year off right with a warm welcome to our first 2024 Artist in Residence, Justin Ming Yong.

Justin Ming Yong (b. 1989, Hamilton, Canada) is a Toronto-based artist whose quilt-making practice explores an unconventional, modern approach in an otherwise classically folk-art medium. He examines the relationships between bold colour theory, dissymmetrical shapes and mixed fibres to disrupt expectations and create pieces that are layered and multi-dimensional. However, despite his devotion to the contemporary, he is far from dismissive of tradition, often incorporating and reflecting on heritage and legacy in his work. Yong considers his own ancestry through themes of forgotten landscapes, cherished foods, and exploited histories by practising a family tradition of quilt making. In 2023, Justin had a solo exhibit called To Fill A Field at the National Quilt Museum in Kentucky, USA and he was part of group shows at the Art Gallery of Guelph and the Plumb, Toronto. His recent press includes features in the Globe and Mail, Designlines Magazine, Insight magazine by Sotheby’s, Sharp Magazine, Toronto Life, and Canadian Quilter. He has been invited to host workshops with numerous quilt guilds and was a guest panellist during Toronto Design Week at the Ace Hotel.

You can view Justin’s quilted works of art at The Lobby from now until March 1st, 2024.
